There are many transportation options to get around the city or travel outside the city. Hamilton has public buses and dedicated bike lanes within the city as well as train and bus services to other cities. Public transit is wheelchair accessible, and there are special transportation services for people living with disabilities.

  • If you would like to drive your own vehicle, an Ontario driver’s license and insurance are required. Visit drivetest.ca to book your test and find your nearest DriveTest location.
  • HSR is Hamilton’s public transit service, with almost 300 buses operating across most of the city. HSR is a safe, convenient and affordable way to travel. For information about how you can use HSR transit, including bus schedules, fares and payment options, visit hamilton.ca/HSR.
    • HSR has fare programs for passengers of all ages, including children and seniors. Visit hamilton.ca/HSRfares for more information.
    • Fare Assist offers Hamilton residents who are recipients of Ontario Works, the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) or have household incomes below the Low-Income Measure, a discount on current single-ride PRESTO fares for themselves and their family.     • All HSR buses are fully accessible for person with disabilities. More information about accessible transit is available online at hamilton.ca/ATS.

Ancaster Community Services Assisted Volunteer Driving

This program is designed to support Ancaster clients who have limited or no means of transportation to get to and from medical and/or professional appointments within the Ancaster/Dundas/Hamilton area.   This program relies on volunteers to drive seniors to medical (or medical related) appointments and bring them home.  Medical appointments take priority over professional appointments.

Social bicycle sharing program using 'smart bike' technology, offering many stations throughout the city. Bikes can be booked or used as needed. An interactive map of stations is available on website and as a downloadable app. More details are available on the website.

Hamilton is also home to the Everyone Rides Initiative (ERI) which is committed to equity in cycling and removes the barriers that prevent people from accessing bikes and cycling as an option for transportation and fun! The ERI works to make Hamilton Bike Share more equitable through:

The committee mandate includes:

  • advising City Council, through the Public Works committee, on all matters related to cycling
  • monitors the implementation of the Hamilton Cycling Plan
  • encourages and participates in planning for bicycling facilities

The committee encourages citizens to cycle instead of drive. Offers education on the benefits and necessities of cycling, and integrates the work area of municipal bicycle committees.
